True North Green Ammonia
Harnessing renewable energy from the polar winds to produce the fuel of the future

Background
H2Carrier early identified the Finnmark region in northern Norway as a strategic place for floating green ammonia production due to its long history with renewable energy availability and favorable energy costs. This coincided with the launch of the Norwegian Government's "Power and Industry Initiative for Finnmark" in August 2023 aimed at utilizing reneable resources locally to develop new industry and employment opportunities.
The municipality of Lebesby was a front runner in identifying the potential to utilize renewable resources for local industries and value creation and thus ensure that the benefits of permitting new wind power locally, to a large extent remained within the municipality. In 2022 H2Carrier signed a collaboration agreement with Lebesby municipality to develop a green ammonia project and has been developing the project since then. The project was named “True North Green Ammonia”.
Being positioned at the very north of the continental Europe mainland, the polar winds in Lebesby municipality offers some of Europe's best onshore wind resources. This has been the premise for several wind projects currently under development in the municipality. One of these onshore wind projects, Oksefjorden wind farm (which was recently consolidated with an overlapping project and is now called the Bjørnviktuva wind farm) was initiated by H2Carrier to provide additional new renewable energy capacity to the municipality. Parts of this power was planned to supply H2Carrier's True North Green Ammonia project.
Summary
The True North Green Ammonia project utilize the 500MW P2XFloater (P2XF500) to produce 400 000 tonnes of green ammonia annually using renewable energy in Finnmark, Norway. The project site is Landersfjord in Lebesby municipality.
Ammonia will be produced, stored and off-loaded to LPG carriers through ammonia transfer hoses, and the LPG carriers will in turn transport the ammonia to the market.

Location
One of the many benefits of Finnmark is the good wind resources. However, the good wind resources makes it challenging to find a suitable site for a green ammonia project as even the fjords are exposed to strong waves.
In dialogue with Lebesby municipality, H2Carrier has mapped out several potential sites for the project. The sites needs to be fairly sheltered from waves, sufficient distance from third-parties, yet fairly short distance to the power grid.
The two best suited sites that were identified were Kifjord and Landersfjord, but due to the TSO's concession for a grid upgrade near Landersfjord, Landersfjord is where H2Carrier puts its focus.
Following a dialogue with the landowner Finnmarkseiendommen (FeFo), entered into a land lease agreement for the site on the east-side of the fjord.
Landersfjord offers:
-
Sheltering from the main wave direction
-
Short distance to the TSO's new 420kV grid upgrade
-
Shared 132kV grid connection point with 6 wind farms under development
-
Distance to private houses
-
Proximity to established industry
Overview
H2Carrier has applied Statnett (TSO) for a 500MW grid connection for this project and recently completed the Pre-FEED for H2Carrier's 500MW P2XFloater™ design - the P2XF500.
The Pre-FEED was completed in collaboration with Wison New Energies as a leading engineering and shipyard within floating process solutions.
Power will be received from an overhead line to transformers onboard the P2XF500 which will distribute the power onboard.

Use of ammonia
Ammonia is a critical commodity which plays an important role today as a key ingredient in artificial fertilizers, and will play an important role in the near future as a zero-carbon energy carrier. Green ammonia is produced using water, air and renewable energy as input.
The green ammonia from this project could also be transported to Svalbard and used in combustion engines with generators to de-carbonize the energy system on the island with a short-distance reliable supply of green energy.
Green ammonia can be used for:
-
production of sustainable artificial fertilizers for food production
-
carbon-free marine fuel for ships with ammonia combustion engines now becoming market-ready
-
renewable power generation either by gas turbines, combustion engines or co-firing in coal power plants
-
cracking back into pure hydrogen for use in hard-to-abate sectors such as the steel industry

Timeline
The True North Green Ammonia project is being developed in parallel with the TSO's 420kV Skaidi-Lebesby grid upgrade and the nearby wind farms under development. As such, the project with production start in 2032 is structured to coincide with the completion of the grid upgrade and commencement of new wind power production.
